Friends of Axé

Over the years Projeto Axé has come to the attention of many people, some of whom are particularly famous. Numerous international and Italian celebrities have become “Friends of Axé”, sharing its mission and testifying to its activities and achievements.

Caetano Veloso – Brazilian singer-songwriter

caetano veloso“Projeto Axé is one of the finest realities in Brazil, because in our society there is nothing finer that to respond spontaneously to the needs of the most disadvantaged, namely poor children. Organising fashion shows, creating fashion with these youngsters, who live without protection on the fringes of society, is a lesson in elegance for all of us, and this is what Projeto Axé does.”

Daniela Mercury – Brazilian singer-songwriter

daniela mercury“I think Projeto Axé is extremely interesting. I believe it is an example for the whole of Brazil and, as a UNICEF ambassador, I hope it might be an additional tool for increasing the self-respect of children and Brazilians so that they can believe in themselves, in their potential and in such an important and beautiful project as Projeto Axé.”

Paulo Coelho – Brazilian author

paulo coelho“Projeto Axé is a dream. I have spent my life trying to show that dreams can come true, and this is exactly what Projeto Axé is doing. The educators have come here from Italy and other places and are working with a universal conscience, in the knowledge that the future lies with children, not just the future of Brazil but of the whole world. Projeto Axé is a dream come true.”

Gilberto Gil – Brazilian musician and former minister of culture

gilberto gil“Projeto Axé aspires to convert Brazilian society to its cause, which in reality is the cause of society itself, and it is the cause of liberation, of settling Brazil's social debt; and this desire is shared by all who are associated with Projeto Axé.”

Syusy Blady - Italian television presenter (eg. Presented the successful series “Casual Tourists”)

gilberto gil“As a casual tourist I firmly believe a visit to the Axé headquarters is a real pleasure! I advise everyone intending to go to Salvador de Bahia to drop in to lend a hand; they will see colour, art and creativity blossom among the poverty and wretchedness, because the passion for education creates an ideal world, which is even better than the one we have at home!”

Dori Ghezzi – Italian singer and president of the Foundation Fabrizio De André

gilberto gil“When I first met Cesare de Florio La Rocca and got to know Projeto Axé I was fascinated by the beauty and passion that this pedagogical project is able to transmit to children and youngsters living on the streets, who know only poverty and loneliness. I have had the good fortune to get to know these youngsters close up, including through the viewfinder of a video camera, and I have managed to grasp the values that are most important to them: friendship, respect, understanding and reciprocal concern. These are fundamental values which, through art and the realisation of a dream, offer a new chance in life and the hope of a better future.”

Fiorella Mannoia – Italian singer-songwriter

gilberto gil“Salvador is ravishing, bewitching, with all its contradictions; those who know and love the city understand the importance of Projeto Axé, which goes beyond providing welfare services in the way we are accustomed: it is about restoring lost dignity, hope, dreams... to which we all have a right. Through Art the youngsters affirm themselves and their personality, they share ideas and learn about living together and respect for human dignity, but most importantly... they come into contact with beauty, which is the only key able to unlock the door to the heart.”

David Riondino – Italian singer-songwriter, actor and director

gilberto gil“Axé has set itself the goal of providing personal emancipation through artistic education. I believe this mission is not just the intention of those who work with street children in Bahia, but rather, in its most noble expression, is one of the most important ideas of our civilisation. To educate in Art means to give citizenship to wonder and surprise. Let's not deny ourselves this possibility. Let's support Axé.”
