Projeto Axé

Mission an beneficiaries

Mission

The mission of Projeto Axé is to help improve the life of children and adolescents living in conditions of social hardship in Brazil.

Beneficiaries

Projeto Axé has worked with over 18,000 children and youngsters (divided equally between boys and girls and aged between 4 and 25) with a very high “success rate”: 85% of the kids have not returned to the streets or to a life of drugs or crime.

Projeto Axé is not a boarding school; the youngsters do not live in but instead are reintegrated into their families (when possible) or helped to live on their own. To this end the project also works with families, which are key to the children’s rehabilitation, helping them to take their own responsibility.

In addition Projeto Axé works with the state school sector, developing programmes geared towards the schooling of socially vulnerable youngsters; with other public institutions (juvenile courts, the police, hospitals and the government) to create the necessary social awareness; and with other NGOs and international organisations to spread its particular pedagogical methodology (which is considered valid and replicable not just in Brazil) and to stimulate and inform policy making in relation to urgent issues and problems involving children and adolescents (for example the use of weapons and drugs, or sexual abuse).

So Projeto Axé benefits not only a multitude of children and youngsters from Salvador but also their communities of origin and a multiplicity of stakeholders inside and outside Brazil.
